On The Come Up was written by Angie Thomas, the author who also wrote The Hate You Give. Angie writes books that give people an inside look at what black people experience in real-time. She uses the storyline to show and express that the people who experience these things are human and deal with things just as much as the next person. Not only do her books paint the lives of minorities, they also paint some of the issues teens face daily. The book starts with Young Bri, who is an aspiring rapper unable to pay attention to her Act work as she is waiting on a call from the DJ of the “Ring” to see if she made it to the battle. See Bri Doesn't have it easy like most kids, She has two stable people in her life. One being her mother who really wasn't stable in Bri’s younger stages and her big brother. Her mother is a recovering drug addict who is struggling to better herself for her children. She also witnessed the murder of her father at the age of four. Knowing her mother is struggling to catch up with life, Bri wants to blow up her talent in rapping. She uses her aunt Pooh as her manager until that becomes an issue for Bri later on.
