One theme I largely picked up on was coming of age. Growing up, we make lots of mistakes, and the transformation from teen to adult comes with loss.
Adulthood is a very confusing and complex event. During this event the world seems way better than the childhood, it is considered fun and free. But in the eyes of many it is a world of cruel and unjust society. Why a person thinks like that? Is there any reason why people is scared of reaching the adulthood?
Society is a changing at unimaginable rates. Rates that can be scary for any individual because they do not want to be left behind. One slip could be the beginning of a compounding problem. A problem that could stick with them for the rest of their life. This problem makes life unpredictable and chaotic.
This is because we have been caught up in the fast paced lifestyles of western society or as she describes it, “speeded tempo of living” (Lee, 5). It may be difficult to state what a certain social problem is within a society, because in many different societies, there are many different norms and ideals. However one can agree with Lee that a society that has gained dependant on social structure because they feel that is how they will gain individual freedom, does have a social problem relating to individual autonomy. The overall outlook of society has changed from child rearing, language, work and leadership.
In reality and fiction, there is a sense of disconnect from the things and ideas that have been set in stone from the past. This prominent theme looms before our daily lives to subtly remind us of the importance of our past. In modern times, teenagers constantly want to “grow up” in order to feel like they have control of their lives. They clash with their parents and throw themselves into freedom.
