My time in 4-H, working, volunteering, and my first semester of college have provided me with leadership opportunities and experiences that were often challenging. In order to cope with these challenges, I had to develop skills that would allow me to move forward. The first of which is the ability to work well on a team. This skill is one that I’ve had to practice in many environments such as completing a group project, playing softball, working in food service, and volunteering as a camp counselor.
Approach to Teamwork Target is an organization that believes the need to invest in people. The focus of teamwork at Target is to foster an environment that encourages everyone to partake in some form of team contribution. The culture is friendly, fun, and collaborative which creates an atmosphere that resonates how employees view Target as their employer of choice. Currently ? Failure is an opportunity for some to improve and build upon themselves so they have a better chance to succeed in the future. My junior year at Western Branch was an exciting one with a lot of surprises and disappointments. That year my track team came close to winning the state championship, but with a lot bad performances by the team, myself included, we were not able to overcome the competition. It was an even greater blow when the girls’ side of the team won, despite the boys’ team having more naturally talented athletes. The work that we put in during the summer, fall, and winter felt like it was for nothing more than to lose some weight and get in shape.
The team is divided into groups based on both ability and location. This presents challenges to the team. Robbins and Judge state that “a team’s performance depends in part on the knowledge, skills, and abilities of individual members”. (Robbins and Judge, 2017) The abilities and goals of a 5-year-old just starting out vary greatly from the senior in high school that is trying to earn a college scholarship.
In a group communication context Tuckman theorised and established the “Developmental sequence in small groups” in 1965. His theory on group communication, educates us on how people work together through 5 stages. Forming, Storming, Norming, Preforming and Adjourning. Forming is the first stage; and is at the very beginning of group interaction with one another, participants tend to behave independently and although willingness to communicate and get on.

In order to accomplish missions and tasks successfully, teams must be cohesive and unified, as well as meet and exceed the standard. In order to build teams, leaders must develop teams through three stages, formation, enrichment, and sustainment. The first stage, formation, is the stage in which the initial team is built and comes together for the first time. The second stage, enrichment, is the stage in which team members gradually grain trust in themselves, followed by their peers, followed by their leaders. The final stage, sustainment, is where teams are fully invested in their teams, and are proud of their group.

Harriet Tubman was not an obvious choice as a leader because she was uneducated, she began her life as a slave, she lived in a culture that did not respect African-Americans, she was barely over five feet tall, and she can not read or write. How did Harriet Tubman gain respect? Harriet Tubman gained respect because every summer she would risk her life by going south and returning with more people, which also gains people trust. She was also fearless, and she her leadership was good.
One of the many benefits of the middle school model is that being part of a team forms a bond between the teachers and students. “The team and their students truly become a community of learners.” (Kellough & Kellough, 2008, pg 8) In order for a team to be successful teams must provide tools to help students grow. (Erb, T. O, 2006, pg 5)
Figure 1a illustrates that teams have a strong collective image, centred around the idea of collaborative working and sharing and end goal and vision. The diagram implies each individual’s work is coordinated to fit with the whole team. The ‘team’ concept is shown as a united unit, therefore indicating that the team’s attention is focused on the outcomes of the overall unit, as the team members are equally as committed to each other as much as they are to the end goal(s) This mutual commitment generates joint accountability, this then leads to a strong connection and therefore leading to keen motivation to perform through dynamic interaction. This idea is supported by Biz Journal (2013) which suggests ‘The muscle and strength of a team emerges
ENGAGING OTHERS WITH LEADERSHIP 2 Effective leaders are those that can lead with fairness and are able to engage the staff and align their goals with those of the organization for which they work. Those in leadership positions are tasked with motivating a group of people with different ideas, attitudes, and personalities. Having an engaged staff has shown to lead to greater staff satisfaction, patient satisfaction and lower turnover rates. While it may be difficult to bring a group of people together and align their goals with the organization, leading diverse groups can also be positive in that new ideas and approaches can be brought to the team.

INTRODUCTION The word ‘team’ can be defined as a group of people working together towards a common goal. A team also generally is known as a group of people with different skills and different tasks, who works together on a common project, services, or goal. Then, the important thing in teamwork is ‘collaboration’, which is the act of working effectively with others to achieve a common goal.
