Brutus And Mark Antony Ethos

After reviewing the speeches of Brutus and Mark Antony and their use of pathos, ethos, and logos, the actions and reactions of the crowd clearly show that Antony is the more persuasive speaker. Antony brings up topics but says he should not talk about it because it would hurt the honorable Brutus but the crowd’s curiosity allows him to talk about certain topics. Antony brings up the will but says he will not read it because it would hurt Brutus, the crowd demands that the will be read which is exactly what he wants. Brutus and the other conspirators knows that the crowd could easily turn against them because of how effective of a speaker Antony is, which is one reason why Brutus left when Antony's speech started. Although Brutus has many strong ethos lines, Antony uses a technique that only strong speakers can pull off. Antony references topics that go against the conspirators but he keeps reminding the crowd that Brutus is an honorable man, being sarcastic about it. Brutus says, "With this I depart: that, as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself when it shall please my country to need my death." (III:ii:42-44) This line is very effective in making sure the crowd is on Brutus's side. In Antony's speech he states, "My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar. And I must pause til it comeback to me." (III:ii:104-105). Antony is really close to Caesar so he takes the death of Caesar very bad. Antony also says, "You all did love him once, not with cause, what cause with holds you them to mourn for him?" (III:ii:100-101). Antony is asking in that line why the people are not mourning the death of Caesar. Antony hasn’t won them over yet so Brutus's speech is still in their heads which means they are praising the conspirators, this will not last
