Brutus on the other hand does not use irony, and this adds up to why Mark Antony had the better speech. Mark Antony reveals the actions of the conspirators, using the body of Caesar and in irony remarks, "I fear I wrong the honorable men/ whose daggers have stabbed Caesar." (III.ii.163164) This is ironic, because men cannot be honored if they just killed a man that was falsely accused of being ambitious. Although Antony still abides by the restrictions that he cannot say anything bad against the conspirators, his tone is so sarcastic and ironic that even the plebeians figure it out and reply with, "They were traitors. Honorable men?"
During the seminar, many different view points and perspectives were expressed. One of the ideas that were discussed was that Antony and Brutus used different rhetoric devices to express their feelings. Antony used many examples of pathos in both his funeral speech and his everyday life. He aims to establish emotional reactions from his intended audiences and sometimes over uses this device. Brutus on the other hand does the exact opposite.

In the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare , Brutus and Antony both have different ways of getting the people’s attention through their speeches. Brutus and Antony appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos. Both use them differently to manipulate the people. Brutus uses them to confuse the people to justify the killing of Caesar. Antony uses them to take advantage of the plebeians and turn them against Brutus.
When talking about the differences between the two speeches the main difference is how each person uses logos, ethos, and pathos. When Brutus says his speech the main ones he uses are logos, and ethos. The example for Brutus is in his opening line of his speech when he says “Romans, Countrymen, and lovers” (elements 831). What this states is that Brutus wants to speak to them logically as he thinks they are intelligent people and will understand what he says for his reason (Schoolworkhelper). Whereas Antony uses pathos and connects with the people emotionally by saying “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” (elements 834).
Within Antony’s speech to the Romans he uses anaphoric text to spike a whirl of rage towards Brutus. Repeatedly Antony states “Brutus is an honorable man” emphatically for the duration of his speech to contradict Brutus’s nobility ( March Antony, Lines 83,88,95 ). Before Antony begins his speech he is approached by the Romans with comments to not speak bad on Brutus’s name, which is why he utilized the anaphora to repeat that Brutus is an honorable man therefore allowing him to gain the Romans trust to speak. Antony does not say these lines truthfully but sarcastically to make the people of Rome feel furious against Brutus for taking Caesar to his mortal death.
In the play Julius Caesar written by Shakespeare both Antony and Brutus lay out very persuasive speeches. They are trying to persuade the citizens of Rome that Caesar was assassinated for the good of Rome. Antony created a more persuasive speech because he was able to use rhetorical techniques such as pathos, repetition, and verbal irony skillfully, and he was able to back it up with supporting evidence allowing him to persuade the city of Rome more easily. One of the techniques Antony used to persuade was pathos.

In this scene Caesar has been murdered by the conspirators including Brutus. Brutus is one of Caesar's good friends who is driven by honor; who thought Caesar’s ambition was going to be the end of Rome. Antony is a very loyal friend of Caesar’s who does not agree with the conspirators. Brutus and Antony are both smart well thought out characters. They desire to persuade the commoners to their side of the situation.

Brutus uses ethos the most in his speech, he was considered very honorable by the Romans. Since he was very honorable everyone believed that anything that came out of his mouth had to be true. Brutus had an easier time to win over the people of Rome. Antony is constantly questioning Brutus. Antony targets the credibility and character of Brutus when he says; “And Brutus is an honourable man.”

Brutus tries to get the people the accept the death while Antony tries to convince the people to go after the conspirators. The two occur several times throughout the play as a result of the main character's ability to wheedle the common people and other government members into their own plans. One such example of powerful persuasion lies in the way the funeral speeches of Brutus and Mark Antony drive the Plebeians to their own motives. While their speeches reflect one another, one comes out victorious over the other. Mark Antony's manipulative style of public speaking ultimately overpowers Brutus' call to reason and honor.
Brutus delivers his speech in a laudatory manner by conveying Caesar’s deeds and claiming he was ambitious, although Antony contradicts Brutus’ claims and says Caesar spurned the crown with the intent to merely rule as a de facto dictator. Brutus’ speech reveals his motives were truly for the benefit of Rome given his nationalistic tone and Antony’s speech was merely used to obscure his true motives, which was to embroil Rome in a series of civil wars to attain power. Brutus and Antony’s speeches consisted predominantly of Pathos and Ethos, but it is Antony who ultimately it is Antony who prevails because of his almost disingenuous attitude and even use of Logos which is seen when claims that reading Caesar’s will would dishonor his compeers and even Caesar
