Have you ever been bullied just for being you because you are different from everyone else? Well, bullying or prejudice is very common whether in books or real life. With this being the case, the definition of bullying is when someone causes harm physically or mentally because of something being odd. Though most commonly, bullying tends to be perceived as physical harm from usually someone much bigger than you literally or figuratively.
Bullying is a repeated behavior where one person or group of people who deliberately intimidates or abuses an individual person with the intention to hurt that person physically or emotionally. Any act of bullying can be physically or verbally. Being bullied can take an emotional strain on someone who is being bullied. The effects of being bullied can be: depression, thoughts of suicide, poor attendance, low test scores, or anxiety. These are just a few of the effects that can happen when someone is being bullied.
Denise B. Geier, an instructional specialist at Montclair State University and Deborah Lee, PhD recently wrote an article on the effects and social consequences of bullying. They provide definitions of terms relating to bullying, discuss the key players of the issue and why it typically occurs during the teenage years. In their article, they describe how some children are more prone to bullying than others and how schools are addressing the issue. Geier and Lee use statistics and examples to support their arguments. The goal of their article is to provide background on bullying, why bullying may occur, and the reasons why some kids are more susceptible to exhibiting bullying behavior.

Bullying occurs every day due to social pressures, cultural insensitivity, and learned behaviors during formative years, and therefore is a pervasive issue that affects both the bully and the bullied, causing self-esteem issues, mental health problems, delay of social skills, and should be addressed and prevented by parents. Bully is a very widespread problem and affect many individuals, especially students. One out of every five students report being bullied (Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center, 2016). Victims must learn to stand up for themselves. Consequences need to be required when it comes to bullying.
