In the poem “America” by Tony Hoagland, the author discussed the American lifestyle, and the culture presently in his own perspective and opinion. I agree with his opinion about the people in America, and the atrocious reality that we are living in today. This present reality that Hoagland addressed reflects my view and my perspective not just about the people who lives in America, but innumerable people that lives on Earth. Hoagland, not just criticized the lifestyle and the way Americans are living, but also the materialism that exists in most of the people.
The Bernie Sanders campaign’s “America” ad, featuring a homonymous Simon and Garfunkel song, is undoubtedly a positive ad, filled with warmth, hope and enthusiasm. The minute-long advertisement switches focus from the candidate to the voters, or the American people. The ad opens with the shot of a snowy day, with wind turbines in the background. The image brings viewers Iowa to relate whatever else happens in the rest of the ad, since Iowa is one of the “top states for installed wind capacity.”

However, consumerism is a growning problem and requires a solution much bigger than a single day of the year; Buy Nothing Days may raise awareness and could potentially disrupt harmful consumerist practices, but consumerism is a hefty problem and Buy Nothing Days don’t have large enough of an impact to fix it. Buy Nothing Days are good in some aspects, and are extremely beneficial in raising awareness towards consumerism and its downfalls.

This got me to thinking.

The Buying American policy will protect few at the expense of many. Economic effects of such measures are well documented in American history. In 1930, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act raised United States tariffs on more than 20,000 imported goods to record levels (Markheim, 1).
“About forty percent of food produced in the United States isn’t eaten” ( Food Network) Easily half of this product have minor imperfections or shape deformities preventing them from being sold.
