CSU Counselor Conference Reflection Paper

I attended the 2016 CSU Community Counselor Conference by the CSU office of the Chancellor, Ken O’ Donnell, and Cynthia Turner, CSU Dominguez Hills. The conference took place September 27, 2016 in Riverside, California. The mission of this conference is to keep every community college counselor informed, so they can be well prepared to assist their students navigate through the CSU admission process. The workshops that were offered were the Early Assessment Program Overview, Enrollment Updates and Student Success, SAT Updates, Veteran Affairs in the CSU, CSU admissions criteria, Financial Aid Eligibility, CSU’s General Education Transfer Curriculum and The Overview of Eligibility for AB540/2000. Even though all 23 CSU campuses are sisters to one another, they all have different deadlines and transfer procedures that student must follow. Therefore, the purpose of the conference is so that counselors have the opportunity to interact with presenters specifically regarding various CSU campus admission practices. I was very hesitant to attend this conference because only counselors were invited. The requirements indicated that students must have 60 transferable units, a 2.0 grade point average, and 30 units of the general education courses done, which includes their major prep. In addition, the student must have their “golden four” which are part of the CSU General Breath Plan or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, also knows as the IGETC. If the student does not have their oral communication, written communication, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking done, they will be automatically denied from any CSU
