The three things I learnt from the article are that, firstly, the Canadian Practice Process Framework (CPPF) is flexible to allow alternations of course of therapy in the practice process. This may involve shifting entirely the focus of treatment to a new intervention strategy. Secondly, occupational therapy is not always a linear process and the action points are not discrete as they occasionally overlap. For instance, evaluation of progress occurs in several stages of therapy. Lastly, the CPPF emphasises client’s participation in treatment decision making. Therefore, in order for therapist to implement an intervention plan, the client has to also perceive the need to undergo such treatment.
An interesting idea that I found in the reading is that a collaborative decision may be made to either initiate or terminate the therapy process at the very first stage of practice. Regarding this, I would like to learn how a therapist could, at the first point of contact, negotiate with a client who was referred to occupational therapy but is defensive and does not perceive the need for the service. Secondly, therapists have to engage in reflective practice before labelling clients as “non-compliant” because clients who are deemed “unmotivated” may be dealing with difficulties like illness and loss. Thus, therapists ought to constantly remain attentive and prudent to explore the factors that are hindering clinical progress. Thirdly, therapists are not suggested to give clients advice regarding their progress in an intervention. Instead, they should encourage clients to take control of the process and respect clients’
