Many people are often found in a building surrounded by technology, but they are not seeing what is going on around them. There are many things surrounding us that we do not pay any attention to, like a baby bird may be learning how to fly or a tree is living out it’s last day. By sitting behind a computer or walking around with our noses in our phones, we are not acknowledging what is going on around us. I did not realize what I happened to be missing out on until my father and I spent a day out on the Platte River. The day was warm and humid, the perfect day for mosquitoes to be out and about, attacking anyone who comes near. The water was getting thinner and thinner and soon there was a slight noise of rocks on the bottom of the boat. This startled me severely because I didn’t know how to swim and I didn’t want to fall in and get swept away by the current. Dad knew how to right the canoe so I relaxed slightly, but the canoe was picking up speed. With rocks below us, sharp branches in the water ever so near, we were locked in and had to figure something out. I started to push my paddle on the right and the canoe began to turn. Just like that we ended up sideways on a rock right before the median. We were both calm and slowly steered the canoe out of the rock’s hold. The canoe was rocking madly in the water as we were now going backwards, Dad was in the front and I was in the back facing the opposite direction. Even more scared than before but still calm, I listened to all of dad’s directions and after a few moments of struggling, we finally got it straight. The ride back to the dock was fairly short and we made our way to the bank. Upon arriving and propelling ourselves onto the bank, I had a hard time getting out of the canoe. The mud on the bank didn’t hold my foot so I feel into the water soaking my body from my stomach down. While dad got a laugh out of that, I continued to struggle until I finally was able to get up the bank. The heavy canoe was soon lifted out of the water and carried to the back of the truck. It was the perfect way to spend the day and if I could, I would relive this day over and
