I will never forget the day that a research proposal for a renowned cardiologist examining adult congenital heart disease came across my desk for review and submission. Momentarily, I paused as I checked the budget for mathematical accuracy and contemplated how, if awarded, this research would impact my own son who was born with two heart defects. Moving me to tears, this was the defining moment that solidified my purpose as a research administrator. My passion for this field stems from my intrinsic motivation to help make the world a better place; I recognize that my service to scientists, doctors, and engineers allows them to focus on innovative and break-through technologies that change, improve, and even save lives. While my career thus far has given me vast experience in the many facets of research administration, I am committed to my professional development beyond that which I receive in the course of my day-to-day responsibilities. Working with a variety of sponsors (industry, state, and federal) and providing support for both engineering and medical research fields, my career in research administration has never had a dull moment! I feel that I have made great strides in a short amount of time and I have taken ownership of each of my positions by learning as much as I could as quickly as possible. The “on-the-job” training that is often experienced by those of us in the field of research administration allows us to quickly engage in our roles with those we serve. However, I recognize that there is also great benefit to investing the time to focus solely on education and development. Pursuing advanced academic studies through a Master’s program such as yours would provide me with the opportunity to study and learn in a highly concentrated manner.
