03/28/24 Summer Science James Gonzalez-Luna Summer Science Medicine has always been fascinating to me. From the way it acts on hormonal pathways to genetic predispositions, so much goes into the seemingly insignificant tablet. To take a glimpse at the esteemed research that goes into creating life-altering compounds at the UIC College of Medicine alone would be remarkable. Therein lies what I seek to gain from this program: experience amongst leading scientists in the field and the intricacies of research that changes lives. As I submit this application, I can say with aplomb that this will be the next step in a possible future within the medical field. Overall, in a constantly evolving medical field, I want to be certain that I can aid in whatever challenges emerge—utilizing technology is a key component of that. Furthermore, I am ready to cultivate networks and collaborate with researchers. To engage with those who are experts in the field and share my passion for the medical field. Establishing and building these relationships with researchers will aid in the lifelong pursuit of research and, moreover, establish a dialogue to learn about the advancements that are happening here, in Rockford, and around the world. Additionally, down the road, internship opportunities and guidance may be in play under their mentorship. The next few years of my life are in limbo: college decisions, internship opportunities, and career paths. Uncertainty shrouds every corner and path that is present; however, a clearer path is present under the influence of the summer science program. With so much to be learned, doors to be opened, and faces to meet, guidance and opportunities become apparent, whether research and medicine are what I want to pursue or possibly another
