Enrolling into the MA in Biological Sciences program will be a pivotal step in my pursuit of a career in medicine. My aspiration for a career as a neurologist and an advocate for quality healthcare in my home country is the result of momentous experiences that have focused my interests on scholarship and service. As a major step in my educational career, the MA in Biological Sciences program will equip me with invaluable skills and insight to excel in medical school, and eventually as a professional in the medical field.
Throughout my basic and early high school education, I pursued various interests; thus my desire for a career in medicine only began to materialize during my junior year in high school. As part of my high school curriculum, I was required to complete at least 75 hours of community service by the end of my junior year. Additionally, I was required to pass a social justice and ethics class, in which I would gain exposure to various philosophies on the importance of service to others, and on one’s role in society. Due to the politicization of healthcare policies, the healthcare system is rife with issues including a crippled health insurance scheme, a disconnection between medical research and clinical practice, and policies that makes specialization difficult for physicians. These issues result in a system that is unable to adequately meet the needs of the citizens, especially in specialized or complex cases. The limitations of the healthcare system are well known to Ghanaians, however efforts to meliorate the situation are either ineffective or met with insouciance from the appropriate authorities. Therefore, in addition to my work in the clinical field, I seek to actively work with other advocates to promote a more functional healthcare system that is less influenced by political
