My fascination of the environment is what attracted me to the construction industry as it is necessary to provide for future generations. As the industry is currently enjoying a period of growth I believe it is important to recognise that infrastructure affects everyone; from where we live and work, our built environment has to be carefully planned and designed. There is a direct link between planning and costing in which quantity surveyors and construction managers hold crucial roles, ensuring that projects are completed on time and on budget. For me geography does not stop in the classroom, my perspective on global development and the built environment has been widened by my experiences abroad. Having seen the mass developments of Singapore and China in comparison with sustainable construction in Monument Valley, Utah, my spectrum of geographical awareness has been directly applied to the real world rather than simply text book knowledge. In Business we studied topics on management, this being of significant importance as the industry does not only depend on management in costs, but also in client expectations and relationships between contractors and the construction team. Budgeting and negotiation is another topic we covered, so I am aware of its importance in order for working projects to ensure construction is as efficient as possible.
