Both movies had the same theme being to fight for your love and not leave it for anyone else. Both stories had them falling in love and not wanting anyone else but each other. In both stories Juliet is being forced to pair with Paris but she is firm on
“Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than your own. ”- H. Jackson Brown Jr. This quote is reflecting the main point of Romeo and Juliet. In this tragic story both Romeo and Juliet put themselves before each other and act upon what will not only benefit them but will benefit the significant other even more.
The biggest difference between the movie and play is the setting. Romeo and Juliet was set in Verona, Italy and West Side Story was in the Upper West Side of New York City, New York. Also, West Side Story was set in the mid-1950’s while Romeo and Juliet was from the either the fourteenth or fifteenth century. Because of this huge time difference they are constantly acting in a way that would confuse the other party.
Theme: Love may hurt (you)/ Love is a game, if you aren’t careful you’ll get hurt./you have to learn to play before you get hurt. Romeo and Juliet fall in love, initially Romeo was hurt and that’s why he met Juliet. Upon meeting her, they instantly fall in love. Knowing it could never work between them due to their family feud, they still fought for their love. As hard as they tried in the end they both died.
Romeo then goes to Juliet house party; they end up falling in love that night. While some differences between the movie and play are weapons, when Romeo sneaks out and when Juliet wakes up before romeo dies. The similarities are how Mercutio dies in both the play and movie. In Romeo and Juliet the two different families didn’t get along. In the movie it can make it more action packed when using guns in a fight.
While the two stories are very similar, many differences can be seen between the two. Differences such as characters not dying, characters being gnomes, and a modern setting, change the story of Romeo and Juliet from a tragedy into a comedy. One of the major differences between Romeo and Juliet and
In the Movie and the play the characters look a lot different from each other. In the play they were dressed in more fancy clothing such as suits and other older looking clothes. IN the movie they were not as fancy
At the beginning of the play, the fight between the Capulets and Montague is a significant part to see the hatred within the feud. Throughout the fight scene, many servants from both sides are hurt, and the fear of the bystanders causes the Prince to be called. Before when the Prince leaves he declares, “If ever you disturb our streets again, / Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace” (1.1.98-99). The Prince is tired of the dangerous fights and bitterness between the families.
The first major difference is that the play’s setting ventures outside the Younger’s apartment. In the book, the setting is strictly the Younger’s apartment and the characters do not go anywhere else. Whilst other settings are mentioned, the play never actually takes place there. In contrast, the scenes in the movie are quite different and there are many scenes that do not take place in the apartment. For example, there is a scene in the movie where Mama looks to buy apples at the supermarket and is treated unjustly due to her skin color.
Have you ever read a book and then watched the movie that was a lot different from the book? Well Romeo and Juliet 1989, movie was different from the book because it was modern day Romeo and Juliet. The movie was about Capulets and Montagues as gangs. But both the book and movie have much in common because Romeo falls in love with Juliet, Mercutio and Tybalt both die, Romeo and Juliet both kill themselves, and Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet in secret.
The greatest obstacle between Romeo and Juliet's love is the war that is happening between their families. In Act 3, scene 1, Mercutio and Benvolio were found by Tybalt and he says, ¨Mercutio, you hang out with Romeo.¨(Shakespeare, Act 2. line 43 pg.39) The only reason why Tybalt wanted to fight Mercutio in the first place was that he hung out with a Montague. If Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio were not Montagues they would not be targeted by Tybalt.
The setting of the movie is the first obvious difference that can be seen. The movie was set in New York City, New York in 2000 while the play was set in Elsinore, Denmark in the late middle ages. This greatly affects the way the movie is viewed because it is essentially an entirely different world. In the movie there are video cameras, cars, phones and skyscrapers, all things that obviously weren’t around during Shakespeare’s time. Even if the movie and the play had been based in the same year, the story still would have been slightly different.
Pointless conflicts often stifle positive changes in society. This is shown no better than through the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Set in 1300s Verona, Italy, the play follows the story of the Capulet and Montague families with an ancestral feud. The two children of these families are Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. They fall in love but are unable to have a normal relationship due to their families’ conflict.
Romeo and Juliet Compare and Contrast Although Romeo and Juliet grew up in two different households meant to hate each other from the day of their birth, these two star crossed lovers find each other in a different light. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet By William Shakespeare, Romeo being a Montague and Juliet being a Capulet were born into this family feud. The two of them fall in love at a party where Romeo was out looking for the original girl he was in love with, Rosaline, and Juliet was there to meet her future husband Paris. With love playing a huge part in this play, it's concluded that Romeo and Juliet are both a Eros kind of lover.
