Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet are two very well known stories that portray two star crossed lovers. The story of Romeo and Juliet is a play that depicts two lovers that fall in love despite being separated by fate. In the end, Romeo and Juliet both die. The story of Gnomeo and Juliet is a movie that, like Romeo and Juliet, depicts two lovers that fall in love despite being separated by fate. In the end, the couple lives happily ever after. While the two stories are very similar, many differences can be seen between the two. Differences such as characters not dying, characters being gnomes, and a modern setting, change the story of Romeo and Juliet from a tragedy into a comedy. After the transition to gnomes, viewers cannot relate to the characters and they lose much of their empathy towards them. Converting the characters to gnomes also brings comedy to the story through some of the activities that the gnomes participate in. Activities such as lawnmower racing makes the story more comical and veers away from the tragic nature of the original story. While the gnomes in Gnomeo and Juliet have the same personalities as the humans in Romeo and Juliet, the transition into gnomes takes away from the serious and calamitous essence of the original story. The second major difference between Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet is the characters not dying in Gnomeo and Juliet. When characters do not die, a story loses much of its emotional value. Therefore, when characters do not die in Gnomeo and Juliet, readers do not feel as much empathy towards the character who died. For example, when Romeo and Juliet die at the end of the original play, the Romeo and Capulet families mend their hatred for each other.
