In the movie Gnomeo expresses the same feelings when talking with Juliet “we can't keep doing this, our families have been fighting forever. We will never been able to be together because our parents wont allow it”(Gnomeo & Juliet). Romeo changes his mind throughout both the movie and the play about the reds/capulets. The movie Gnomeo and Juliet did portray Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet accurately with a few minor detail changes. The family feud was the same in both the movie and Shakespeare’s play where the Montagues and Capulets did not get along based on unknown reasons. This was shown in Gnomeo and Juliet in the beginning of the movie where they had a lawnmower race. Tybalt, a Capulet, was racing Gnomeo, a Montague, on lawnmowers and Tybalt cheated and broke Gnomeo’s lawnmower. This scene represented the families rivalry because it showed how the families disliked each other and were willing to do anything to win even if they had to cheat.

Gnomeo & Juliet puts a fairy tale like spin on the classic Shakespearean tragedy, set to a collection of Elton John’s greatest hits, this animated rendition of Romeo and Juliet is full of vibrant colours and ridiculous puns. The film parodies itself, poking fun at the endless retellings of the same story and Shakespeare’s undeniable love for unhappy endings. Though this revival aims to reinterpret the story, its subtlety leaves much to be desired. Therefore, I have decided to give this film 3.5/5 vials of
Gnomeo and Juliet is a spin off of Romeo and Juliet, the play. Some of the differences may be a result of the movie being aimed at children while the play is usually read in highschool and not read by preschoolers. The basic plot is the same; likewise, some famous lines in the play are noticeable in the movie. After the transition to gnomes, viewers cannot relate to the characters and they lose much of their empathy towards them. Converting the characters to gnomes also brings comedy to the story through some of the activities that the gnomes participate in. Activities such as lawnmower racing makes the story more comical and veers away from the tragic nature of the original story. While the gnomes in Gnomeo and Juliet have the same personalities as the humans in Romeo and Juliet, the transition into gnomes takes away from the serious and calamitous essence of the original story. The second major difference between Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet is the characters not dying in Gnomeo and Juliet.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the most recognizable written works of English literature, with countless adaptations, parodies, and media inspired by the play permeating pop culture today. The reason behind Romeo and Juliet’s popularity in the world is obvious: people love to hope that a beautiful love story will succeed, and people love the catharsis of a tragedy. Romeo and Juliet perfectly marries these two desires and sparks the desire to create a new twist on the tale, whether that be giving the story a new ending or using the framework of the original story to explore a new issue or idea. Gnomeo and Juliet (2011) and West Side Story (2021) are each an example of these ways of reworking the Shakespeare play, with the new

Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, originally published in 1597. It is a tragedy of two star-crossed lovers, who fall in love with each other despite their families hate. The play is taught in many schools and it is often coupled with a movie adaption of the play. There have been many movie adaptations of Romeo and Juliet done and yet there are only a few out of the five I have watched that I would recommend. The top one that I would recommend is the 1968 version, directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
