Quickly the prejudiced and racist citizens of Maycomb County believed Miss Mayella Ewell and her side of the story about the incident on November 21, 1934. Her accusations were supported by her parents, as they gave names of people she should accuse. She joined the girls and put on an act that the court believed. In court, she would yell and pretend to be getting attacked.
On the day of the trial, the jurymen gathered in the Maycomb County courtroom to give Tom Robinson a fair trial based on the evidence. They heard four people give testimonies and get questioned, but three of those stories did not align. Meaning someone had lied under oath about the events that happened between Mr. Robinson and Ms. Ewell. ISSUE
Harper Lee used this trial and created many parallels between the Scottsboro Boys case and the Tom Robinson case. The similarities include the idea of black men being accused of raping white women. In the Scottsboro case, these boys were illegally riding a train on their way home and along them were 2 white women. These women were pressured by the cops to accuse these young men of raping them. Similarly, in Tom Robinson’s case, he was innocently walking home when Mayella Ewell called him over, and almost raped him.
Tom Robinson was later taken to court for the accusation. While he was asked questions, he tried to tell people what had happened that day at the Ewell’s house.
