Catherine (Cathy) Cesnik was born on November 17, 1942, in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Anna Omulac-Cesnik. Cathy was the oldest of four children, who all grew up Catholic and attended the All Saints School in Baltimore, Maryland. Growing up, her parents were very busy, her father with his job, and her mother with taking care of her younger siblings. This led Cathy to feel like an outsider, she often wanted to visit her grandparents. Cathy attended St. Mary’s School on 57th Street and St. Augustine High School, both in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania. She was a very active member in high school, becoming president of her class and student council, Valedictorian at graduation, as well as being voted May Queen. An investigator who was called to the scene during the discovery of her body, states Cathy was lying on her back on the slope of the hill, with her purse and one shoe a few feet away. Investigators had suspicions that the body was Cathy Cesnik. It was confirmed when opening the purse, they found a prescription pill body with her name on it. At the time of the disappearance, Cathy’s students reportedly stated that Cesnik appeared to be cleaning up her inner turmoil. She seemed stressed, exhausted, extremely nervous, even on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It was reported that Cathy missed lots of school during the spring months. A possible reason for all of Cathy’s stress and worries could stem from the fact that she asked Notre Dame superiors if she could live outside the convent, and if she was able to wear “civilian” clothing rather than nun attire. Cathy was granted permission and moved into a two-bedroom apartment at the carriage house on North Bend Road.
