“Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rival ship, interest, humor, or caprice? It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world... we may safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary emergencies.” This quote from George Washington in his 1796 farewell address describes the opinion of the United States for a majority of its history. Americas public opinion and national policy had the purpose of minimizing the risk of entering another war.
It was december 7th 1941, a day that japan ensured the world would never forget. Despite high risk japan decided to take the gamble and enact their terror on an american naval base by the name of pearl harbor. Hundred of japanese fighter planes descended onto the naval base taking a total of 2400 lives and wounding over 1000 people. There are three main that I believe lead japan to their decision those things being , oil embargo, us militarization, and the new world order and expansion. To begin with japan was upset about oil embargo.
December 7, 1941 is considered one of the most impactful days in United States’ history: the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Despite their size, Japan left an incredible amount of damage with their 5 submarines and 408 planes. President Roosevelt had been avoiding scuffling with Japan since their pact with Germany and Italy; war with Germany was sure to erupt soon enough. However, soon after the ambuscade, the United States’ declared war on Japan and launched their involvement in World War II. Japan’s leaders recognized the risks of invading one of America’s naval bases; yet they persisted.

The Purpose of Japan’s Attack on Pearl Harbor Approximately 2,008 navy servicemen, 218 army personnel, 109 marines, and 68 civilians lost their lives in the chaos of December 7, 1941. On that night, unknown to the United States, Japan led an ambush on the American forces in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, destroying three ships and over 150 aircraft. Stunned at the suddenness of the attack and the reality that Japan had lashed out against them, the U.S. Congress immediately proceeded to declare war the following day. But why were these actions taken by the Japanese government?
It seemed that strategically the Japanese was always one step ahead of the United States. Plans and strategies that took months to develop were ruined and thrown out. Because the Japanese had thought things through and had planned ahead to counteract any of the U.S. military actions or they just happen to be at the right place at the right time. At this point, the United States had very few options left, one of these options was to take the island of Okinawa. The purpose for this operation was to invade and establish air bases there to carry out bombing in Japan, forcing the Japanese to surrender.
China as a people which was frankly not something Japan intended to do. After accessing their options Japan decides to continue with their path but deceive the United States by continuing Negotiations as an attempt to make it seem like they had no real intention of going to war and still wanted to avoid it. That being said America was indeed aware of Japan's violent intentions they just couldn’t figure out where they would strike. And then on December 7th, 1941 we found out. In Pearl Harbor the Japanese completed a highly successful surprise attack involving roughly 360 planes.

I was very fortunate to visit and participate in a South Washington County ISD 833 group band performance at this historic site, in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. While visiting this monument, I learned about the significance of this International aggression on the American soil. This attack symbolized a threshold point for Americans from just offering support to the Europeans to becoming actively involved in the war.
