Many people have different opinions on who caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but the truth is, their deaths were Friar Lawrence's fault. Friar Lawrence helps them take actions they should not have done and did not properly explain what was happening to Romeo and Juliet. Friar makes bad choices throughout the entire play. He helped marry Romeo and Juliet without making plans to tell others, gave Juliet a potion to fake her death, and left Juliet alone at her most vulnerable. Friar Lawrence caused Romeo and Juliet’s death by acting hastily when marrying them. He should have made a plan to tell the others in their families. He also should have tried harder when explaining to Romeo that his “love” for Juliet may simply be a crush. When Friar is told that Romeo wants to marry Juliet he responds with “Young men’s love then lies /Not truly in their heart, but in their eyes”(II, ii 67-68). He does not put much thought into this plan, much like he did not think through marrying Romeo and Juliet. When Juliet comes to Friar, distraught about having to marry Paris, Friar tells her “A thing death to chide away this shame/if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy”(IV, i 74-76). While giving Juliet the option to pretend to die, he is not thinking about the potential consequences for Juliet and himself. Friar does not think of how this will affect those in Juliet’s family either, or what they will do if Romeo does not receive his letter. The whole plan is put together too quickly and not thought out enough. These actions then directly lead to Romeo dueling Paris and killing him and then killing himself. Therefore Friar is responsible for both Romeo and Paris’s deaths. His plan to fake Juliet’s death is the second reason they
