Nearly 20 million men and women died from World War One, other wise known as the Great War, but for what? World War One was taken place in Europe, summer of 1914. The war set off when a Serbia nationalist group called the Black Hand wanted independence from Austria- Hungary, so they decided to assassinate the Archduke of Austria when he came to visit. As from there, it became a world war because alliances from the two countries stepped forth to protect them. There are many reasons as to what started the war or what made it turn into a world war, but the main three are alliances, nationalism, and assassination. One of the cause that made 20 million people die and created people to lose their homes were, alliances. Alliances played a huge role as to why is was a world war instead of just a war. As soon as Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia, then Russia would come because the two countries are allied. Once Russia is involved, then Germany will join because it is allied with Austria- Hungary. This cause is responsible for widespread war because of countries and their allies. Without them, Serbia and Austria- Hungary would have gone to war with no other country included.

The Black Hand was a Serbian group who wanted independence from Austria- Hungary, their solution was to kill the Archduke while he came to visit their country, by the group’s act, this was a spark to a war. Austria- Hungary gave Serbia days to turn the group in, Serbia denied and said they could handle the group themselves since it's in their country. Nationalism is an extreme form of patriotism and loyalty to one’s country. This resembles the acts of Austria trying to terminate the Black Hand group who killed their
