Lisa Bates-Ramos is a Latina writer and illustrator. During her childhood, she spent her summer vacations in Sector la Araña, Puerto Rico, with her grandparents. Her grandfather, an amateur painter, introduced Lisa Lynn to her first set of paints. Once vacation was over, she continued to paint at home, on anything and everything. On walls, brown paper bags, and her brother’s play clothes.
The book, “Celia, A Slave,” is a true story written by Melton A. McLaurin and published by the University of Georgia Press in 1991. McLaurin was an educator at the University of South Alabama where he served several years as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs before retiring. He is known for writing several articles and books about the American South and race relations. He wrote this book specifically about slavery and how women and men or blacks and whites were divided. Whites were superior in the United States.
Selena Quintanilla Perez was the Queen of Tex-Mex. She sent waves with her singing in the music industry. She was a well-known inspiring woman. In this essay you will get to know about her early life, career and accomplishments, death, and who inspired Selena. To me she set the pavement and inspired many of the Tejano/Latino singers today.
Edith Chavez, whose ethnicity is Native American and Mexican, grew up under the guidance of her single mother. She was raised alongside her brothers Johnny and Tommy, and her younger sister Bryanna. She grew up in Roswell, New Mexico and now at the age of 23 years old lives in Spring Hill, Florida. Edith has nothing but high aspirations and determination for a successful future. Edith, otherwise known as 'Edi ' to only those close to her, has such tenacity and a kind heart that carries her wherever life takes her.
This Chapter is basically about how people discriminate immigrants for being different and making connection between the past and the present. Miguel de la Torre, a Hispanic man, compares the typical immigrant life, including his, with Jesus Christ. He claims most Hispanics/Latinos/as whom came to “el Norte” and suffered some type of racism for being “illegal” happen to have a similar life as the one the son of God had. According to Miguel, Jesus today is an immigrant whom escaped his origin land, like most Hispanics, with the only difference that Jesus and his earthly parents left their land for protection, and Hispanics, now a days, leave their origin country for economic/political purposes. Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso also known by her stage name Celia Cruz was born on October 21, 1925 in Havana, Cuba. She was daughter to Simon Cruz and Catalina Alfonso and was the second of four children. In the 1940s, Cruz won a "La hora del té" singing contest that allowed her to start her music career. While Celia’s mother entered her in contests around Cuba, her father wanted her to become a teacher. Being a teacher was a common occupation for Cuban women at that time.
She was born and raised in the sunniest place on earth, Yuma, Arizona. She has two older siblings, a brother and a sister. Along with three dogs and a turtle. She grew up a San Diego Chargers fan, but only started watching football when she was in the seventh grade. Not only has she grown into the girl she is today, she has had memorable incidents and experiences.

Food is essential to a growing child and while she may have grown accustomed to hunger pains, Francie was deprived of important nutrients. Everyday, she excels in her job of caring for the children and making a difference in the community. Due to her kindness she would always bring thoughtful gifts for the children. She doesn 't have to do the classes with the children everyday but she continues to do it like Sylvia says “school supposed to let out in the summer I heard, but she dont never let up” (Bambara 96). The lessons learned while earning her degree has lead her to becoming a positive role model in the children 's lives; nonetheless, teaching them lessons that may never learn from others. She shows her passion in the story by saying “she said, it was only her right that she take responsibility for the young ones’ education.
She had written about what the free or leisure time was spent doing and the easiest way to get free time. She wrote that when she had to make a quilt for her bed, she and her neighbors had gotten together and made it together, while the gentlemen drank tea. After a nicely made supper they danced the night away. Then they returned to their house with their families. Along with many other families if you worked really hard, you get to have fun.

I had the privilege of selecting Lindsey Dates for my leadership profile. Lindsey Dates has been my mentor for seven years now, in addition to us being a part of the same fraternity. Lindsey was born in Chicago, Illinois at Saint Francis Hospital on December 17, 1978. He was unfortunate that he did not have his father in his life, so he learned everything from his mother in his early childhood. Lindsey mother was a provider and leader in his house from Lindsey perspective.

Selena Quintanilla-Perez you may or may not heard about her. If you have you know she was known as the queen of Tejano music or known by the media the Tejano Madonna. Even though her life was cut short she continues to live in the hearts of Latino and American community. Selena is a pop icon that has influence me and others because she broke a lot of barriers and had a major impact on the Latino community.
