I had the privilege of selecting Lindsey Dates for my leadership profile. Lindsey Dates has been my mentor for seven years now, in addition to us being a part of the same fraternity. Lindsey was born in Chicago, Illinois at Saint Francis Hospital on December 17, 1978. He was unfortunate that he did not have his father in his life, so he learned everything from his mother in his early childhood. Lindsey mother was a provider and leader in his house from Lindsey perspective. His mother demonstrated genuine and effective ways for Lindsey to carry himself in the real world; she called it being charismatic man. After the interview, I have identify his leadership style as an authentic leader. This leadership style focuses on the leader being genuine and honest to their respected organization. According to Northouse, Authentic leadership develops in people over a lifetime and can be triggered by major life events, such as severe illness or a new career (Northouse, 2016). Lindsey father not being in his life was a crucial reason for him becoming a genuine person toward any and every individual. Lindsey was very intelligent, and he identify his lack of being cultural competency at a young age. He developed his leadership style over time, in which he participated in ethical training and diversity training at the university. According to Northouse, Authentic leaders demonstrates five basic characteristics in which they understand their purpose, they have strong values about the right thing to do, they establish trusting relationship, they demonstrate self-discipline, and they are passionate about their mission (Northouse, 2016). Lindsey emphasized the importance of understanding that he had a gift, and wanted to create a change. He emphasis providing a father figured to the under privileged youth. Secondly, the importance of doing the right thing was always big for him, because he loved helping people and never wanted to be like his father. Also, Lindsey mentioned numerous times how vital it is to build relationship and the importance of being honest and straightforward with people. Lindsey highlighted that he gained self-discipline through his self-awareness of the things he lacked in the work field. Lastly, Lindsey expressed how the Mentor Teacher Brother program was very close to his heart and his mission for the organization aligned with empowering and providing opportunities for the
