Cesar Chavez is an inspiration to Hispanics, Mexican, and farm laborers everywhere. Without the leadership of Cesar Chavez, farmworkers in California would still be mistreated and underpaid. Without the legacy of Cesar Chavez farm owners would’ve gone back to their old ways of treating the farm laborers. Cesar Chavez was a true impact and made a huge difference many people’s lives. Growing up Cesar’s parents owned a farm. When Cesar was ten, his family’s farm was swindled away from them by dishonest Anglos. His father was too poor and couldn’t afford to buy it back. Whenever the union would give into violence he would starve himself for long periods of time. In 1968 Cesar had a twenty-five day, water only fast, in 1972 he went on a twenty-four day, water only fast, and in 1988 he had a final life-threating thirty- six day, water only fast. During his final fast he vowed he wouldn’t stop until everyone agreed to be non-violent and use the power of assembly. They couldn’t give up on their battle. Even though grape sales were low the farm owners wouldn’t give up that easy. They started selling to Europe and brought immigrants to harvest the fruit. To prevent any further sales Cesar went to Europe. He told the buyers about what was happening in America and urged them to not buy any grapes from California. Once the buyers heard about this wonderful cause they stopped buying grapes and started supporting the UFW. Another huge supporter of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Worker was Robert F Kennedy, New York Senator. With the support of him it gave the UFW more of an advantage. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor given by the U.S. This medal was given to Cesar due to his service to our nation’s farm laborers. This honorary medal was not the only dedication given to Cesar. In April 2003 the U.S postal service started selling a remembrance stamp with Cesar’s face, on it. Cesar also has a holiday in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, of course California. This holiday is celebrated on March 31, Cesar birthday, and held in remembrance and gratitude for all that Cesar has done for this nation. His son Fernando Chavez commented on an interview on the anniversary of his father’s death.
