Historically, the period between 1860 and 1877 was a significant time for social and constitutional developments as it was the era after the Civil War and the subsequent Reconstruction. The United States was dealing with the consequences of the war and how to rebuild and define itself as a nation. Influential works like Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, which contain information on the harsh realities of slavery and how Black people are just as capable as whites, opened many people's eyes to their wrongs and played a role in reshaping the public's opinion. The end of the Civil War led to the Reconstitution period, 1865 to 1877. Document 6 a speech to Congress by Lot Morrill exemplifies how detrimental the Civil Rights Act was to amounting to a Revolution after the Civil War. It states outright that the Civil Rights Act is absolutely a Revolution. He goes on to question anyone or place that believes otherwise. This is a revolution because there have been changes in the government's fundamental principles, which is the textbook definition of such. These changes aim to create a more inclusive and equal society for everyone. Developing rights for the freed black men was critical to the development of American society, but with any political or social change comes issues with a particular group of people. These social changes caused tension in many states because the white men in the working class believed that with many freed black men from the South came fewer job opportunities. The New York riots of 1863 were a result of the Civil Rights Act that pushed for freedom because it was closely associated with racial competition for jobs. It solidified the tension between people of color and many white people because even though legally they could not be prejudiced, it did not stop explicit bias. The
