The story is constructed around actual events of the Holocaust during World War II and the religious discrimination of the Jewish groups. Due to the Jewish's belief, they were discriminated and executed by Hitler. Annemarie Johansen, the protagonist of the story, helps her friend Ellen Rosen and her family, who were Jewish, escape the terrible war that was held against the Jewish community. Terrified of the thought of Ellen and her family being "relocated" to concentration camps, Annemarie helps Ellen by hiding her in the apartment during the search activity held by the Nazi soldiers (p. 46-49).
