In this reflection paper, I will be reflecting on chapters nine and ten, which goes into more detail about missions and their volunteers. In these two chapters, Gailey and Culbertson go in depth about the kinds of volunteers that go on missions, and that mission agencies look for in a missionary. Within these two chapters, I have gained more knowledge about missions and what it takes to go on missions. At first, I thought that anybody could go on missions, but after reading these two chapters, I have learned differently. One good source for missions, are retirees. In many countries, people are able to retire from the workforce after working for many years, and often they become bored and in need of something to do. Therefore, in most cases these retirees are making a second career out of missionaries. The second best source for missions, are young people. Spending some time in different places has attracted college and university students wanting to do hands on cross-cultural ministry before starting their career and families. In most cases, people like young people to go on missions because they tend to be more flexible and willing to adapt to new places and situations. Before being sent out on missions, a person first has to discover their ministry gift within their own culture. Therefore, when a person says they have been called upon the pastor should then guide them in the right direction. Becoming that person’s mentor, a person who encourages, instructs, and models.
