Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” In today's world, we are told how to act, what we should believe in, what we should wear, or who we should be like. People imitate others so they can “fit in,” and be accepted by their peers. This has led to people being deprived of their self courage, uniqueness, and beliefs. Being oneself is very important as it preserves their identity, and self confidence when around others.
When people are true to themselves and who they are, they develop a sense of identity in themselves. In the book Wonder by R.J Palacio, the main character Auggie Pullman is constantly bullied, because he has a facial deformity, which makes it hard for others to accept him. Throughout the story, he is bullied almost to the point that he is almost isolated from everyone else at his school. Even though Auggie begins to lose hope of being accepted, he soon finds a girl named Summer, which eventually leads to his realization that others accept and value the way he is. In the movie “Moana,” the main character Moana decides to go on a voyage to find a demigod named Maui, even after she is continuously reminded she is not allowed to travel past the reef. Moana, being a curious person, one day decided to travel past the reef. After she is unsuccessful when crossing the reef her first time, it doesn't stop her from remaining true to who she is, and setting out on another voyage only days later. On her next voyage, she is successful in finding Maui, demigod of the land and sea, who in return destroys the darkness slowly covering Moana’s island.
