“F.E.A.R. has two meanings- Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise. The choice is yours.” by Unknown captures Paul’s life. At first, when facing obstacles he forgot everything and ran until he met Luis, he taught him to face everything and rise. A legally blind boy faces challenges when he moves to Lake Windsor Downs, Florida with education, family, and friends. Not to mention strange occurrences. In the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor Luis made the biggest impact on Paul because he displayed to Paul being a catalyst for change, to have a stronger work ethic and served as a father figure. Paul was inspired by him for instance, on page 229, “ Luis answered simply, “ I wouldn’t be they’re punks” he pointed a ropelike finger at me, “ and you shouldn’t be either.” ” Luis was trying to teach Paul that he shouldn’t be afraid of Erik (PAul’s older evil brother) and Arthur(Erik’s easily manipulated friend). Paul was inspired by Luis when he said this because he had been afraid of them for years and now someone believed in him, that he shouldn’t be afraid anymore. This had an impact on Paul because it gave him enough courage to face them; to stand up for himself. In addition, Luis stated, “ I think you are, but not enough of a man to say so...Come on why don’t you try to smack me!” Luis stated this to Erik and Arthur, to test them. He had practiced what he preached. He stood up for Tino, Paul knew this because he had seen it all happen when he was under the bleachers. He was encouraged to stand up for himself against them. He wasn’t afraid anymore which positively impacts Paul through the story. Similarly, Paul fought for his opinion on page 228, when Paul tells Tino that they should be able to go to his house without living in fear of his brother. That was until Luis showed up as an idol and took over the role of being Paul’s idol. A piece of evidence that displays this is on page 221, “ Grab a shovel. Then he held up his KMART bag…Check it out I bought 20 pairs of these gloves for you boys with delicate hands.” Luis had expected Paul to come back and help so, Luis showed that he cared about them by buying them gloves. He didn’t want anyone to get hurt which was thoughtful on his part. This impacted Paul because he was touched someone had cared for him more than his father ever did give him a feeling of support. In addition on page 223, Luis asked the boys if they had slept. This gave insight to Paul that Luis was concerned for their wellbeing to make sure they don’t get overworked. This affected Paul because he felt someone could stand up for him and give him advice if he ever needed
