In the book The Reader by Traci Chee, the main character, Selfia, is separated from her aunt who practically raised her and tries to understand why her aunt was kidnapped, by using a book, of which have been forgotten and lost. Sefia and a later mentioned character, Archer, are particularly similar in terms of both having troubled and traumatic life experiences, they both weren’t raised ordinarily etc. However, they are also differ greatly because they have different motives, they were raised differently, and they both have separate traits that make them unique
Sefia is an exceedingly determine, motivated, and strong person. For instance in the book it says “...she’d find out why her family had been taken, and who had done it, and how to hunt them down”( page 41). This proves that Sefia is driven to get what she wants. Sefia has also had many traumatic experiences: Her father was brutally murdered and her aunt Nin, who practically raised her get kidnapped right in front of her. All of these experiences make Sefia's life extremely unordinary since she and her aunt were on the run. Her aunt taught her to live off of hunting, tracking, and stealing. Sefia frees Archer and together they are inseparable and they fight to reach Sefia’s goals. Like Sefia, he had traumatic life experiences and he wasn't raised classically. He was forcefully trained to kill by horrible people. He was a human weapon. For an example in the book it says during a battle “ ...the boy on top of him like a jaguar on it’s prey… Then the boy grabbed his head and twisted...They boy has killed them. They died do fast” (page 75). This proves Archer was turned into a human weapon since he had no regrets. Archer differs from Sefia because his motives are to simply aid Sefia after she gave him freedom. Archer is overall helpful, caring, but complex and unrepentant when it comes to self-
