In United States, going to college has become an expectation of teachers, and parents for students to attain a successful life and thrive in their field of study, no matter the circumstances, after graduating high school. In this article “Are Too Many People Going to College,” written by Charles Murray, he mentions that everyone is not the same. It is not meant for everyone to earn a college degree; However, society thinks otherwise. According to Murray you also must be “in the top 98th percentile” in order to even apply for a higher education. (Murray 238) Some of the most famous intellectual geniuses didn’t score high during their school years. This shows that tests and score cannot accurately represent where you are academically or whether you are fully prepared for college or not. I agree with Murray, we shouldn’t just attend college because someone is telling one to, one should be able to choose what they want to do with their life. Most young children like learning more than grown-up students. “The core knowledge is suited to ways that young children can naturally learn and enjoy learning (Murray 236).” So Murray is certain that it can either prepare the interested ones for this post-secondary transition, or be more work for what it is worth, according to what their future has in store for them. In my experience, my parents always encouraged me to read and it became something so natural and enjoyable to me that I don’t ever see it as “homework” or an “assignment.” On other hand, my sisters detest reading. Therefore, I think that it depends on the person, whether they end up enjoying it or not. The opportunity is given by the parents and then it is up to the student/child to follow that
