The Chernobyl Disaster of 1986 The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 was the largest and most catastrophic nuclear explosion in history. It severely effected out environment, people, atmosphere, and animals. Chernobyl caused hundreds of thousands of injuries and deaths, and to think we brought it upon ourselves. Chernobyl use to be a thriving city with many people. It was a beautiful city. Children played outside. Cafes bustled and factory workers worked long and hard hours. Chernobyl was like any other Soviet Union city, until Spring of April, 1986. It was early morning April 25, 1986. The workers at the nuclear plant wanted to test out a new idea on reactor four that if successful, would save tons of money and fuel. Each …show more content…
The uranium fuel rods were melting and turning into hot lava. The lava was about to melt through the concrete and into the water hold. If it were to get there a huge hydrothermal explosion would have occurred. A hydrothermal explosion is when underground water is heated too quickly and is turned into steam too quickly, resulting in an explosion. But the water under the reactor core was radioactive, so it would have really exploded. The hydrothermal explosion would have blown up the whole nuclear plant, sending even more radiation in the air. Helicopters flew over and dropped sandbags, but the lava was so hot it just melted and made even more lava. The situation progressively got …show more content…
The use-to-be lush green forest died and turned red and is now known as the Red Forest. Chernobyl is now one of the most unique ecosystems on earth. Since no people are there and their is plenty of shelter animals have a strong chance of surviving. Some of the animals were affected by the radiation, and were genetically altered. Jeremy Wade from a popular fishing show named "River Monsters" caught a radioactive catfish, that had two inch long fangs. It was nicknamed the atomic assassin. Although some animals were affected some were not affected at all. The groundwater in the area was also contaminated with radioactive waste. It is now completely unusable, until we find a way to safely filter the
