No research to date has indicated that applying harsher penalties or mandating national registries has reduced the recidivism rates among sex offenders, reduced sex trafficking against minors, nor child pornography. Despite the ongoing efforts of The Adam Walsh Act alongside other child safety acts as well, children in the United States are still perishing from sexual and physical abuse each day. According to data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), “49 States reported a total of 1,585 fatalities. Based on these data, a nationally estimated 1,670 children died from abuse or neglect in FFY 2015, which is 5.7 percent more than in 2011. This translates to a rate of 2.25 children per 100,000 children in the general population and an average of nearly five children dying every day from abuse or neglect”.(www.childwarefare.gov) Human Rights Watch shares that “the real risks that children face are quite different: government statistics indicate that most sexual abuse of children are committed by family members or trusted authority figures, and by someone who has not previously been convicted of a sex offense.
- When abuse has been ongoing for a length of time , the victim can feel like she/he deserves the abuse, is in denial over the extent of the abuse, embarrassed about others finding out, fear being killed if they left and fear the impact on the children or losing the children. Many victims of domestic and family violence, believe nothing can be done for them- they see on the news how little action is done such as in the case of Benjamin Ard and the assault of two women. In this case Ard charged with domestic violence, but was released from jail on $1,000 cash bail. He went on to breach his bail and was then charged with domestic violence assault and violating the conditions of release from a prior charge; he was sentenced to only thirteen months
According to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an organization whose mission is to envision a national culture in which we are all safe, empowered and free from domestic violence, in a single day in 2019, Michigan domestic violence programs provided services to 3,204 adult and child survivors. Another 376 requests for services went unmet due to lack of resources. This shows how lack of resources can damage peoples stability, and it is outrageous to think that these things are something unfixable so close to home. Another statistic from The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence says that in 2019, 57,018 incidents of domestic violence were reported to Michigan police, and many others went unreported. The incidence of child abuse and neglect has increased dramatically in the past 25 years; the statistics have risen over 130% since 1980 with 1993 being the first year since 1972 in which the number was less than the previous year. Throughout the years child abuse has had a greater impact on the United States and more thorough research has been brought out. At Adult Protective Services majority of our work involves investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. At Adult Protective Services our job is to protect the vulnerable elderly population, as well as the population that have disabilities. “Only APS is statutorily authorized and responsible for investigating elder and vulnerable adult abuse and taking steps to protect the victims, and it is generally only APS that helps the most frail and incapacitated older persons”(Quin, 2012, p.68). When abuse is suspected, a case worker will reach out to all parties involved, such as the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and all collaterals. The United States government is doing a surprisingly little amount for the million of elderly who are being abused everyday. An affective abuse policy increasing elderly protection services is immensely needed. The public should also be informed about elderly abuse, and the individuals who commit the crime of abusing the elderly should have stricter punishments. People in society can help towards pushing for a more goal driven elder justice policy. In the article, “The Elderly Must Be Protected From Abuse,” author Robert B. Blancato explains seven goals which should be addressed towards elderly justice.
As I watched the documentary “Road Beyond Abuse,” I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. From disgusted and disappointed to impressed and joyful, I felt it all. It truly disturbed me to hear about the experiences both Michael McCain and Johnnetta McSwain endured. I was disgusted that no one protected these innocent children from being verbally abused, beaten, raped, and left to fend for themselves. It was shocking to hear that these children withstood this amount of abuse from their family members until they were teenagers.
I watched the Antwone Fisher movie on Tuesday night and was so dismayed by the violent abuse he suffered as a young child. I also had parent/teacher conferences all week and was shocked to learn that one of the little girls in my class had been sexually abused since she was only four years old. In all my years of teaching, this is the first time I have been made aware of a student being a victim of sexual abuse. Even though I have read many times that those who abuse are usually victims of violence, I still cannot imagine anyone wanting to sexually assault a young innocent child. Yet, I read how high the statistics are and realize these are only the ones that have been reported.

There are four types of development, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. Physical development is the growth of gross and fine motor, skills. Gross motor skills are walking, running, throwing, and crawling. Fine motor skills are writing, holding a fork, and using scissors. Physical development is also the easiest to see.
In “The Child and the Shadow,” written by Ursula K. Le Guin, the author examines the relationship between a person and his/her shadow and the boundary between the collective conscious and collective unconscious mind. At the beginning of her essay, Le Guin recounts a fairy tale that she remembers from childhood. The fairy tale follows a man, who is too apprehensive to act upon his fascination of meeting the beautiful woman in the house across the street, while his shadow is much more confident in its ability to converse with the woman. He allows his shadow to isolate from himself and go into the house of the woman completely alone. In the prison system, inmates rely on prison guards for essential goods, which is why the women feel they have no choice but to suffer their abuse. Because these women feel helpless, there are no truly accurate statistics that can tell the specific amount of black women abused in prison. The lack of information is also because most jails don’t keep proper records of the various abuses women report (Isaac, Lockhart, Williams). This proves that these prisons do not care about the well being of these women, nor do they care that the sexual offenders are properly punished.
The physical and mental abuses have long lasting effects. If the women are fortunate enough to flee or be rescued, they then are faced to battle the battle of overcoming mental and physical wounds. Non-profit organizations such as Out of Darkness have teamed up with lawyers, counseling centers, rehab facilities, and help provide housing assistance to ensure that those who are rescued have a secure pathway to recovery (Out of Darkness, n.d.).
Each year in America alone, an estimate of two million children, ranging from infants to teenagers go through minor or major kinds of abuse which include neglect, physical, emotional, and sexual maltreatment. According to the National American Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, neglect represented 54% of confirmed cases of child abuse, physical abuse represented 22%, sexual abuse represented 8%, emotional maltreatment represented 4%, and other forms of maltreatment represented12%. The Emotional Abusing and being abused in Roy’s The God of Small Things Misuse of power and mistreatment of the powerless is abusing; the abuse may start with the infliction of physical, sexual, financial, verbal or emotional violence. Any sort of abuse will be apparently obvious to the abuser and the abused; but it is very difficult for the persons who experience emotional abuse to identify that they are being abused; since the emotionally agitated abuser fails to sympathise the other whereas the unaware victim comprehends neither the intension of the abuser nor the effects of the abuse. Abusing especially emotionally distressing is a serious social evil since it makes the victim socially incompetent. Both children and adult are encountering mental torment that is more vicious than physical abuse. Emotional Abuse is a psychological distress imposed on a submissive by ignoring, denying, aggressing, blaming, humiliating, belittling, bullying and rebuking.
