This not only raises public awareness, but provides hope for those who feel powerless when someone they care about has experienced abuse. However, adult maltreatment is still falling behind fields, such as child abuse and violence against women, in federal funding. Furthermore, after reading the book “Protecting the Shadow.” There were a couple of cases of adult maltreatment that really affected me. One, was the case of an 86 year old lady named Leona Pendleton, who was showing signs of illness, and spent more time in her bedroom than usual. Mrs. Pendleton, who was showing signs of self-neglect, but was too embarrassed to ask for help. In other words, cases like Mrs. Pendleton
