For assignment 4, I researched two peer-reviewed scholary journal articles about childhood obesity. Poor diet in low-income families could lead to childhood obesity, thus increase the health care cost in the United States. Obesity is the number one global health challenge especially in children. If the obesity rate continues to rise then research should that the life expectancy of children in this generation will be shorten compared to their parents’ and grandparent’s generations. I think it t is crucial for the government to focus more on children health care because obesity is a serious health risk. Parental Roles in the Epidemic of Childhood Obesity written by Elizabeth Moore, William Wilkie and Debra Desrochers discuss about how parents treat and feed their kids could greatly affect their children’s health. According to the article, families and consumption are the main cause of childhood obesity. Feeding your children alone is not the only factor that lead them toward or away from obesity. Setting a good example to their kids about how important exercise is can greatly reduce the risk of childhood obesity. In the United States today, about one-third of children and teenagers are either overweight or obese. Obesity could lead to serious health risks that will significantly lower the life expectancy of children of this generation. Parents who encourage their kids to go out and spend more time with nature instead of staring at the TV screen could help reduce childhood obesity risks. Back then it usually the mother’s role to take care of the children, however, over the past forty years, this pattern has shifted. With the increase in maternal employment, father’s involvement in caregiving in the United States has tripled since 1965. Fathers are increasingly engaged in caregiving activities. 70% of father reported that they fed or ate a meal with their children at least once a day. As a result “In a meta-analysis of parent training programs, studies that includes fathers reported more positive changes in child outcomes and parenting practices than studies that only includes mothers”.
