The unfortunate reality of childhood obesity has always been a topic of great debate and discussion in not only the US but worldwide. In recent years, this topic has gained a huge amount attention because of media coverage and health reform in the United States. There is no single cause that can be accredited to the huge growth in childhood obesity rates in America but a mixture of lack of parental control, the food choices that the children are given at school and the continuing lack of exercise of your youth are just a few protentional factors.
An interesting idea on the cause of the rising number of obese children is the idea of adults not properly limiting and controlling their children’s intake and portions of food. This can also happen because of the adults also eating in an unhealthy manner this shows the children at an early age that it is normal to eat in an unhealthy manner. Live Science reports that “Teens whose parents drink soda every day are nearly 40 percent more likely to drink soda every day themselves than teens whose parents do not drink soda.” (LiveScience). Another unfortunate reality of this is that there is a severe lack of healthy options when it comes to food choice in the cafeterias. This is due to inadequate public funding for the school meal plans and with this under funding the schools must purchase cheap, frozen and fatty foods that is given to the children every day. Michele Obamas recently created a “Let’s Move” campaign which focuses on this issue which has had some success in implementing change into school’s meal services but at the same time made it that schools are unable to serve large quantities of food. The food would also go bad sooner and in turn cost the school considerable amount of
