After reading the article “Parenting for Literacy Development and Educational Success:” I discovered some interesting information that I found important to me as a parent and teacher that will impact my work at home and school. This article explains a study Parent Education Profile (PEP) which is an instrument that rates parents’ support for children’s literacy development. Literacy is involved in every subject that students will encounter in school. That is why I believe that any programs, strategies, or assistance that will help improve our student’s literacy development is important to help our students make progress in learning. I also believe that improving parent involvement will help our students as well.
In the article, it mention that parents are mainly responsible for children’s literacy and educational achievement. As a parent, I will say I agree, yet I have heard others say that the teacher is mainly responsible. So, I can see that it is true that single moms make up a high percentage of the children household in our school today. Although I do a good job with my kids and their grades a learning progress is pretty good; I see areas that I would need help in as a parent if I was not in the school system with teachers that are friends and did not have good family support. What am saying is, I know the struggle of a single mom and when dealing with my students I will take this into consideration especially those who are having problems. When I was in school, we had a mentoring program where teachers, administrators, and other staff worker would choose these group of students to mentor.
