Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study is to determine whether parental involvement affects the academic success of African American students. Parental involvement has been shown to be an important aspect of a child’s education. In the African American community parental involvement is often scarce. At the start of elementary school parents are often involved in their students education. Parents attend more parent teacher conferences, volunteer for field trips, and participate in the classroom. However, as the child continues to grow and reaches secondary education a gap appears when it comes to the parent and the students’ education. Students whose parents often participate in their education have displayed positive behavior and satisfactory academic progress, because the parent is constantly involved. In contrast, students whose parents aren’t involved have been witness as to having behavior issues and low academic scores. Though this is not the rule this has been witnessed as an educator in the field. Commonly, there are positive outcomes of parental involvement and the research showed that there is significant difference between having parental participation and not having it. Different from Rockwell, in the article, “Predicting Parental Home and School Involvement in High School African American Adolescents”, research also showed that parental characteristics did not have a significant influence in parental involvement. Students of both low socioeconomic status and high socioeconomic status still achieved at the same level (Hayes, 2011). Consistent communication between home and school throughout a child’s education seems to be an important factor in a student’s academic success. The school can also gain significant improvement from the helping of parents involved.
