Romeo and Juliet In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the characters choices shape and change the way in which a person’s relationship operates and is made through the personal desire to obtain something meaningful. Throughout the play, each character that makes a decision does so with an idea of what they want to gain from the outcome, but they cannot choose the effects it will have on the people around them. Shakespeare shows this in his play through several characters, including Romeo and Juliet as they find a love more significant than the feud between their families. Not only does this quote illustrate what Romeo must do in order to develop a reciprocated love, but it is also a literary device used to foreshadow Romeo’s death. Romeo’s eventual agreement to attend, or rather sneak into, the Capulet Ball, leads him to meeting the beautiful Juliet. Shakespeare’s use of Romeo and Juliet’s shared sonnet develops their relationship and their love. Had Romeo chosen to not follow Benvolio’s advice, his desire would have remained unfulfilled. Words, as well as actions, are impactful and can change the outcome of a choice, altering how a relationship previously would have been. Since Juliet was growing up, she has shared a strong bond with her nurse, allowing for her to confide to the nurse her deepest dreams and inner thoughts. This level of trust gave the nurse the role as an intermediate between the two star-crossed lovers and made it possible for shared messages and secret meetings between Juliet and Romeo.
