"Crossing the Swamp," a poem by Mary Oliver, confesses a struggle through "pathless, seamless, peerless mud" to a triumphant solitary victory in a "breathing palace of leaves. " Oliver's affair with the "black, slack earthsoup" is demonstrated as she faces her long coming combat against herself. Elijah Anderson, a Yale professor, developed the concept or theory entitled the “code of the street” which explains the reasoning for high rates of street violence among African-American juveniles in a Philadelphia community. The “code of the street” is the way of life for many living in poverty-stricken communities which attempt to regulate behaviors. Anderson observed that juveniles in inner-city neighborhoods who are exposed to racial discrimination, economic disadvantages and alienation from mainstream society may lead violent behavior. The Mudville Nine take the field in Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s poem, “Casey at the Bat” The significance of this poem shows the beauty of baseball: the American tradition, die hard fans, a closer look at what happens on the field, and the unexpected turn of events when the hero, Casey, strikes out and the Mudville Nine lose. Yet, it also exposes a dark side of the game. Win or lose, the game can be a bitter disappointment when the players, fans, and the overall atmosphere gives off a negative vibe. In any sport, if you love your team, you stick with them until the sweet victory or bitter end.

Out of the 3 college applicants Mendoza, Gregory, and Gallagher, Gregory would be the best candidate for a MOOC because he is a purposive person that has goals which can be reached easily by taking a MOOC. I feel this way because he is flexible, involved, and a determined person. Gregory is a flexible person, meaning that he has the ability to work in any type of environment without having difficulties. I know he is flexible because in Chunky Peanut Butter he claims that “I lead through example, but I am flexible. I am able to work with any kind of jelly.”

I want students to push themselves harder than they though possible, which has been modeled by my professors pushing me to do the same. Teachers are role models to show students that it is okay to not be perfect, but it is about trying to improve and persevere. George Fox has teachers that modeled and let me practice my own pedagogy, which will allow me to be a confident and effective educator. By finishing my education at George Fox I can show my students what it is like to set goals and finish them. I am a proud first generation college student
