Before you take a highly important test, you should study. Before you run a marathon, you should train. Before you attempt to survive on your own, in the wild, such as Chris McCandless from Mr. Krakauer’s Into the Wild tried to, you should prepare yourself to. Chris McCandless, while a daring and intelligent young man, was a fool to blindly run into the wilderness without taking precaution to survive. Courtney Long ( 2014 ) once argued, “I think that Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time.” McCandless’s choices were an oxymoron, when comparing how he was so bright, yet so foolish. The risks are even higher when you’re alone. Many people who go camping take many precautions, such as tents, food, food preservers ( such as a cooler ), spare clothes, lighting fluid/ a lighter, etc.. Some dangers of going into the wilderness include: poisonous greenery, such as poison ivy, stinging nettles, wild parsnip, lyme disease carried by ticks that live on deer, wild animals, the weather, and by far much more. According to MkCapen1 from eNotes.com ( 2010 ), McCandless only brought a rifle, ammunition, rice, a small stove, books, and a few misc. others, and while he brought a map, he forgot it in the truck of the man who drove him there. He brought nothing to change into if his clothes are torn, no soap to wash with, nothing to help build a shelter that would last longer than a tent, and so on. Nature and all its glory is beautiful, scenic, and is completely different from the feeling any city provides. Some like to go to wild areas for the peace and quiet alone. I also can sympathize with McCandless’s desire for freedom. Young adulthood is one of the most stressful parts of most people’s lifetime. The transition from being an adult in school, still restricted like a child, then to being free to be an adult, but finally to having to learn all the restrictions, responsibilities, requirements, etc., of true adulthood is arduous for most. Worst of all, school attempts to prepare students for the real world, but doesn’t provide typically. All the restrictions, directions, and turmoil of the real world can make a person not strong enough, or not willing to comprehend cower and seek freedom.
