Analysis
When referencing the validity of the two religions; Christianity and Buddhism, I feel like I understand why they are both viable options. Christianity shows that God loves us, and cares for us, and if we accept him, and accept Jesus Christ as our savior we will be granted eternal life. It also gives us a code of conduct to live by and make our choices by. Buddhism focuses on the journey of self-enlightenment, which is also a valid religion because its main goal is to make you understand and work in harmony with the world around you. It works to eliminate stress the same way that Christianity works to eliminate the negative effect Satan has on a person. It is my belief that Buddhism is an exercise in self-improvement, more than an entire religion. It explains enlightenment is what everyone should be striving for, and it delivers the way to achieve enlightenment, but I can’t say that I agree with that as an end. To me understanding the world, and being in tune with the world is a step in the right direction, but you should use that enlightenment, once it is attained. Both religions also believe that love for your fellow man is paramount, “Perhaps Jesus’ most impressive characteristic was his emphasis on universal love-not just for the members of one’s own family, ethnic group, or religion. He preached love in many forms: compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, acceptance, helpfulness, generosity, gratitude.” (Molloy) This aligns with the view of compassion and love in Buddhism, “The great prayer of Buddhist compassion is this: May all creatures be well and happy. It is common Mahayana practice to wish this to the world everyday.” (Molloy) The term compassion in Buddhism is more involved than the way it’s used in the English language, it means caring for the entire world around you and everything in it.
