The Principles of Christianity and Islam The two largest religions in the world are Christianity and Islam, with nearly a collective total of 4 billion adherents. Today, these two faiths are steadily coming neck and neck with each other in terms of followers and are projected to keep rising throughout the 21st century. Although both religions have striking differences, they also are more alike than most individuals realize. Many of the common principles and teachings of both faiths can be considered analogous. Muhammad, unlike Jesus, was a mortal being. It is believed by Muslims that Muhammad received messages through an angel, Jibreel, and began recording his revelations to form the Islamic holy text, the Qur’an. He taught the message that there is no other God besides Allah and that one’s life should be lived in absolute obedience and compliance to Allah’s will. Similar to Jesus, Muhammad and his followers received disapproving hostility. The small Islam community that Muhammad founded begun to endure great persecution by the Quraysh, a tribe in control of the city of Mecca, who did not receive his preaching with good will. Muhammad spent a short period of time building the Muslim community away from Mecca before transitioning into a militant position. Muslims are expected to practice the Five Pillars of Islam while Christians follow the Ten Commandments. Both Christians and Muslims believe in following these set frameworks of their faiths. The Ten Commandments are laws that the Bible say God himself spoke into existence. The condensed Ten Commandments include the following: Worship no other God besides Him. Do not make idols. Do not misuse the name of God. Observe and keep the Sabbath Day holy. Honor your Father and Mother. Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not accuse anyone falsely or tell lies about others. Do not covet. The Five Pillars of Islam are obligations for daily Muslim practice and involve: Shahadah (reciting and declaration of faith), Salat (the performing of ritual prayers at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and night every day), Zakat (the act of giving 2.5% of one’s wealth to assist the poor and needy), Sawm (the act of fasting during the month of Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage to the city of
