The Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca around 570 AD. His father died before he was born so he was raised by his uncle. Muhammad began working for a wealthy merchant woman named Khadijah. She soon became attracted to him and proposed. When he was forty, Muhammad began having visions and hearing voices. Muhammad always took journeys to sacred sites near Mecca. This flight from Mecca to Medina became known as the Hegira, Arabic for “flight.” The Muslim calendar begins on this year. In Medina, the people welcomed Muhammad and his followers. He built the first mosque and worked to separate Islam from Judaism and Christianity, which had originally influenced him. Originally, his followers prayed facing Jerusalem but now he had them face toward Mecca. Muhammad continued to have revelations of Allah. These revelations formed ideas of a poetic text called the Koran. The Koran contains fundamental ideas of Islam. Muhammad fought a number of battles against the people of Mecca. In 629, Muhammad returned to Mecca with an army of 1500 converts to Islam. Before his death two years later, he converted most of the Arabian Peninsula to his new faith and built a small empire. There are no pictures of the Prophet Muhammad in the Kaaba because muslims think that the people will worship Muhammad instead of Allah. Muslims find images of Muhammad inappropriate because depictions of Muhammad or any prophet is forbidden in Islam.
