In Is Google Making Us Stupid? Carr creates a strong argument for the negative effects increasing technology has on society as a whole. I completely agree with his argument however I would word it differently. Its not making us stupid however its making us lazy or think in a less intelligent way. Instead of going to the library and picking up a book for research you can google it. Cant figure out a math problem? Google it. You don’t even have to put in the effort to think it through as some of my old math teachers would say. Not to mention that almost everything is on Quizlet. I would be lying if I said it didn’t. Ever since getting my IPhone I can’t even sit and do my homework without looking at it. If I hear any type of buzz, vibrate, etc. I immediately check it even sometimes in the middle of a timed quiz. On occasion my phone doesn’t even vibrate and I just THINK it did and check it yet again. In result, homework assignments and studying takes much longer than it should. The internet also provides us with summaries of pretty much any book. Therefore, who even picks up their textbook or chapter book when Sparknotes gives you a free summary. Social media has also impacted my reading. When it comes to Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram to name a few they have limits on the amount you can write. Before recently being changed, Twitter only allowed 144 characters. Sometimes rather than doing my homework on my laptop I go off to check Facebook, listen to Pandora, online shop, etc. Basically anything and everything but what I am supposed to be doing at the moment. On the contrary, I personally feel I write my best essays when they are typed on my laptop. I can easily save and go back and edit my work time and time again without having to erase and scratch out words or make sure my new idea fits in the space of the old idea.
