The Second Largest Religion Muhhamed heard an angel in a cave leading to the start of a major world religion today. The religion is Islam, but followers of this religion are referred to as Muslims. As a Monotheistic religion, Muslims worship the god Allah as their one and only god. Islam, the second leading world religion, follows the basic principles of the Five Pillars, and uses the Quran as a basis for the belief and practices of Muslims.
How Islam Began
Muhammad was born in the city of Mecca (Saudi-Arabia today) in 570 C.E. By the age of six his mother and father had passed leaving his grandparents to look after him. To evaluate the world around him, Muhammad would meditate.

At first they did not like him preaching this new religion, but after many years, towns close to Mecca asked him to become a religious leader for them. In 622, Muhammad traveled to Medina with his followers; this journey is known as Hijra by Muslims, and is also the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Seven years after that, Muhammad and his supporters returned to Mecca and conquered them. He preached until his death. When Muhammad died, Islam really began to spread. Shahadah is the first out of the five pillars. It says that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's messenger. Muslims are required to practice this. Salāt is the second out of the Five Pillars. This means that followers of Islam are required to pray five times a day: before dawn, midday, midafternoon, after sunset, and night. The reason for their prayers is that they believe that it lowers the chances of being disrespectful to Allah by committing sins. All Muslims must do a ritual washing before
