Hero or Villain? Christopher Columbus, hero or villain, no one has a true answer. Although it is said he found the Americas, there were already natives there, so is he really the founder of America?
Decades after Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas and ‘found North America’, in 1492, Americans were put in a survey. 85% still to this day described Columbus in positive terms, such as “he discovered America.” 6% said that Columbus was a hero, 2% said that Columbus couldn't have found America, because the natives were already here. 4% described Columbus as a villain, who brought in diseases, slavery, and death to indigenous people. Columbus also wasn’t even looking for the Americas, he was looking for the fastest route to Asia. Cristopher Columbus isn’t and shouldn’t be considered a hero because of such actions when he came to America such as, enslaving a group of natives known as the Taino. The Taino was a friendly group of natives, who willingly traded jewelry, animals, and supplies with sailors. The Taino were also good looking. Columbus even said, “they were very well built, with very handsome bodies and very good faces.” Columbus continued with, “they should be good servants.” Columbus forced them to become christians and used violence against them if they refused to do so. It is said by many that Columbus was the first to believe that the world was round, but that is also untrue. People already knew that the world was round. He just set out to sail around it. Later, Columbus was then arrested by the Spanish Government and had many charges put up against him.
