Exploring the unknown? Receiving and conquering land to expand the power throughout the world? Christopher Columbus wasn’t like any other explorer. How was he different you may ask yourself and maybe question some things? How did he persuade Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand to help him fulfill the actions and other things to complete this task?
Sprouted from the essence of the Republic of Genoa, now part of modern day Italy, a once undistinguished being perpetually protruded from the abyss of history. Although he was originally from Italy, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Upon the discovery of this arrangement, copious amounts of questions arose from the public concerning why the Spanish monarchy would hire a foreign explorer, instead of a Spanish explorer, for such an important expedition. While the crown’s decision may seem dubious on the surface, the Spanish monarch realized the advantages of working relationships between foreign parties. Christopher Columbus was a renowned Italian explorer, navigator, cartographer, and colonizer.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.

The voyaging, conquering, and colonizing, that commenced in this age not only transformed the lives of the Europeans, but the rest of the world. It was tumultuous, charged times that brought about this expansion and inspired the Europeans to sail, but even more weighty consequences that followed the era.
Columbus comes across as deeply religious, strategic, and politically ambitious. Firstly, Columbus comes across as deeply religious based on the way he acknowledges God for bestowing on him myriad journey mercies that led to a successful voyage. Additionally, since he knew Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand II had strong ties with the Catholic Church, Columbus tactfully introduced the idea that the numerous native peoples he had found constituted a prime ground for Christian conversion and expanding the monarchy’s political jurisdiction. Secondly, Columbus is highly strategic, starting with the way he throws in political and religious ideas to the Spanish rulers, trying to demonstrate that the Indies were ready for conquering by Europeans.

Most people in our nation grew up thanking Christopher Columbus for the Discovery of America and celebrating him every year on the second Monday of October. And although Columbus spurred the exploration and eventual colonization of the New World he did not discover the country we call home. Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas and enslaved the peaceful natives for selfish reasons. Does this sound like a national hero we should celebrate? No, of course not.
