Cole grew up with his Dad beating him up when Cole would do nothing wrong. Cole never understood why his Dad was beating him up until Cole’s Mom shared with him that his dad, too, had been beaten as a child. Once Cole found out the reasoning for his abuse, he had a better understanding of his father. Kenai’s world view changed from the relationship he had with Koda.
He seems like the person who uses lies to escape the truth of his life. Cole feels to that since he keeps getting more chances, there is nothing to lose. He doesn't realize that sometimes telling the truth and getting in trouble is better than telling a lie and facing the guilt. In conclusion throughout the novel Cole Mathews has a very big temper, he doesn't trust anyone ever, and he never tells the truth.
Cole 's father, WIlliam Matthews, is an alcoholic with a tendency to beat his son. Cole evidently hates his father for this. He hates him enough to not care about
Lockdown by Walter Dean Myers is a novel that will keep you on your toes. Inspiration, courageousness, nervousness, and depression are all the emotions you feel while reading Lockdown. A topic based around someone making a mistake and ending up in jail isn’t easy to digest, but when the prisoner is only fourteen it’s unbelievable. While reading this book it was quite obvious Walter Dean Myers arranged a lot of research for this novel, it was written very well and full of facts. Hearing stories of gang violence, drug abuse, and shootings is a big wake up call for anyone who interprets this novel it reallys make you realize how grateful you should be for what you have.
Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.

At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
Garvey played a big role in helping Cole’s mother change because he made her realise that Cole’s dad is not the only one to blame for what happened. Cole found out that his dad was arrested and charged with child abuse when he was in the hospital. It was Garvey who confronted Cole’s mom and he told her: “This is what has come from your silence. Keep quiet now, and you share the blame.” (page 116)
After Being mauled, Cole finally learned. After being rescued he went back on trial and ended up going back to the island where he and Peter both made up and became friends. Cole has learned how to control his anger. The three main symbols are fire, the spirit bear, and the baby sparrows; these all have a representation of his anger.
Justice through Truth in A Thousand Splendid Suns Many people use lies to further their own well-being. However, justice cannot be reached until those lies have been discovered. Khaled Hosseini’s novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, follows the journey of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, through their lives where they struggle to survive in a time of fear and war. Through his characters and their relationships, Hosseini reveals the relationship between truth and justice, specifically that justice is only served through truth.
Everything will turn out right in the end, and Cole exhibits this. The whole reason that Cole ended up o the island in the first place is because he made bad choices. These choices led to more bad choices and then Cole had a traumatic experience. This changes Cole’s life forever.
Because of his abrupt behavior, Cole has done many unintelligent things, such as burning his shelter on the island. His anger is his choice if Cole communicates by showing anger, isn’t he responsible for all of his actions? Cole has runined so many options of a better life that have come to him. It isn’t surprising that Cole wasn’t in support of the banishment process. In chapter 2, Cole started to search for an escape on the island, he loathed the shelter, the lonleyness, and the fact that he has no one to blame.
Cole emphasizes in his lyrics that “life can’t be no fairytale, no once upon a time; but [he’ll] be God damned if a n***a don’t be tryin’”. Despite all the shortcomings of his city, that won’t stop Cole from trying to make something out of himself. Cole just doesn 't make songs that are difficult to talk about, but he also makes uplifting music. According to ineedalighthouse.org aproximately twenty percent of teens will face depression. That 's a one out of five chance that somebody in a classroom is dealing with a problem in their at school, home, or some relationship. In his latest album 2014 Forest Hills Drive he wrote a song named Love Yourz. In this song he relates his journey from rags to riches and talks about the pros of having a poor life and the cons of having a rich life.
