In 1631 two men, Roger Williams and John Eliot, arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony seeking a new life away from the corrupt English Church. These two would go on to face many hardships to perform their civic duty. Civic Duty is the duties or obligation a person has to his or her society or community. Eliot remained in Massachusetts, but Williams was banished. While Eliot and Williams both were strong believers in serving their communities and lived their lives accordingly, Eliot devoted his time to converting Indians, but Williams just helped his colony.
